We had our first Termite swarm on Friday in Stamford. This was a swarm that was from a slab on grade structure, so the soil below the slab not getting cold enough allowed the termites to stay active.  We have had a very mild winter so far, and lots of moisture. When spring does role around, keep a careful watch for any insect swarming activity. Termites only fly a short distance then shed their wings. When in a structure, termites swarm toward light. This is the time of year that rodents and larger animals enter our homes.  Our focus is to find evidence of these pests new or old in all sections of the non living areas of the building. We need to look for all access possibilities from the foundation walls, siding and roofline. The seven suspect critters usually are Raccoons, Grey squirrel, Red squirrel, Flying squirrel,  Bats,  Mice or Rats.

When an exterior access hole is found, depending on the size, we can determine who may and may not fit in it.  Animal dropping sizes are well important.  Look for footprints in dusty areas of the attic especially on air ducts, also on the basement and crawl space sill plate areas.

The timing of the noises are crucial. Some animals and rodents are only nocturnal. There are several species of woodpeckers in the northeast. So it’s important to physically see which bird you want to deter. These birds are federally protected so anything more than visual deterrents will require state and or federal permits.

For some reason most people think woodpeckers only bang on houses because there is an insect infestation in the wall of your home in that location. I have spoken to the Connecticut state biologist who said its usually less than 10 percent of the time that this is the case.  Banging can happen when they are just investigating, building a winter home, they hear the tyveck sheeting under the siding making noise, or when the bird thinks insects are in there. During the summer when carpenter bee larvae are developing in your Soffits and rake boards, here is were the activity is insect related.

Spring is here and guess who is starting to move? Pretty much every insect and animal who either hibernated or went into a dormant state during the cold winter months. Ticks, Termites and Carpenter Ants are in the first group to arrive.

The Ticks are out for the first blood meal they can get.  Be careful in planting areas, during the spring cleanup of your yard, weeding and along the woods line edge to your property.

Termites usually swarm when the forsythia bushes are in bloom.  Citronella Ants will swarm as well and can be confused with Termites so please save a sample for us to determine the pest you have encountered.

Many people experienced roof issues with all the ice and snow this past winter. That moisture will be there for a long time and that creates the perfect conditions for Carpenter Ants to move in on continued days of 50+ degree weather.

Squirrels and Raccoons are looking to have a litter of young ones very soon.  Walk around your house looking high and low for any areas that may look welcoming to these animals.
